In recent months I've had more 'grandma duties' on a regular basis. The little Miss goes to daycare 3 days a week, but lately her mum has been attending professional development workshops and the gym on her days off so Anthea and I have had lots of play dates.
From just before she was born last year, I have been checking out the op shops looking for good quality toys. I've got some bargains...really good brands like Fisher Price. The toys have all been washed and left out in the sun to dry.
A friend saw Anthea playing with them one day and commented on all the new toys. When I told him they were all op shop buys, he was amazed.
I've been adding musical toys as I find them as she loves them...and this week she sang the 'ee i ee i o' with the Old MacDonald had a Farm toy.
But her absolute favourite toys are non toys. Anthea has a fascination with brooms, mops and feather dusters. It's hilarious watching her in action.
Is this letting down the 'sisterhood' I wondered...encouraging role stereotypes based on gender ??? But then I remembered the simple physics lessons that I had taught the early years classes during my career. These items are actually examples of simple machines.
Anthea's dad is a mechanical engineer so it's obvious she's inherited his skills and interests. Lol! 😆😆😆

Anthea is gorgeous. She looks a little younger than our Oliver (2yrs 5 mths) - I had to do nanna duty with him on Monday as my other daughter has had surgery and wasn't able to look after him as she usually does on a Monday. Oli and I had fun but I must say that by the end of the day I was wrung out. He has a little volta vacuum cleaner just like his mummy's and whenever Nat gets the vac out, Oliver runs and get his. He does the same thing with his little lawnmower when Natalie cuts our lawn. Such fun aren't they?
Such a cutie.
My boys loved to play with the empty boxes that their toys came in.
God bless.
Maria I agree that the Op Shops are a great place to buy toys...not that I do as my grandchildren live too far away. That is so lovely that you see little Anthea so often.
what joy you must get from spending so much time with this little beauty. Fisher price toys are so well made and so stimulating for the little ones. Anthea is certainly having a whale of a time both playing and cleaning
Children always do the opposite of expectations. They can play with everything with their fantasy.
She is adorable!
I wouldn't worry about stereotypes. I find kids will play with whatever they want I just offer everything to all
Anthea is just adorable... you managed to collect some great toys ..
Love the duster photos !
I'm glad you have come to terms with the "sisterhood" issue - LOL - I guess any practice in gross motor skills is good...she does look cute trying to use the feather duster to sweep up leaves.
Anthea is adorable! It must be such fun to watch her play and "work".
