1968!

My last post was about an old school uniform that I wore in my Grade 11 and 12 high school years. Well it just so happens that years ago I also found a diary that I wrote throughout 1968. I actually thought that I had thrown it out years ago. I toyed with writing about my life then by taking excerpts from the diary but then couldn't find it. Must have thrown it out after all, I said to myself and thought no more about it.

But late last year I just happened to come across this tricky little artifact in a drawer and thought that 2018 might be a perfect time to write about what life was like for me 50 years ago.
When I reread some of the pages recently I wasn't particularly impressed with my 16/17 year old self. I seemed to be quite 'preoccupied with boys' and I reckon I was quite boring. Lol. But reading pages in the last week, it was interesting to note background happenings to my life. It was certainly a 'different time'; so different to the world my girls grew up in in the 1980s/90s!

So what sort of things did I get up to in January 1968?
It was still school holidays here of course as those long summer holidays here are December/January.
January 4 that year was the first anniversary of my father's death, but it only rated a single sentence in my diary entry...interesting?
I wrote about the weather being hot and that on January 1 I sunbathed for the first time in a 'two piece', and got sunburned down one side of my body. I remember these togs being 'hand me downs' from an older friend and they were yellow...and I thought I was just sooooo cool wearing them! Lol 😎.
On another day, a friend of my mother and her 3 children took mum and I for a day trip to the beach...Redcliffe. I wrote in my diary how we discovered we were swimming near a sewerage outlet with all sorts of 'things' floating by...eewww! 😕😕😕. I went on to write that we washed ourselves off and went to Shorncliffe beach where we got stung by sea lice. At least nowadays  those beaches on the peninsula  no longer have sewerage outlet pipes going out into the sea. Just as well!

In those days, town ( Brisbane central business district) was a shortish tram ride from my suburb. Suburban picture theatres had gradually been closing up through the sixties, so we tended to go to 'the  pictures' in the city. On January 4 that year I had an outing to the city...first an organ recital at the City Hall and then in the afternoon, I went to the movies. I don't mention who with but I wouldn't think that I  was on my own. The movie was 'Georgy Girl' starring Lynne Redgrave.

I'd forgotten all that until I read it in that diary! Lol. Reading on in that entry I saw that there was a tram strike for a few hours that day and that I was late home waiting for the tram staff to come back to work. Looking back, I think I know the reason for that short strike. It would have been announced that trams would be scrapped completely in 1969 and replaced by buses. There would be no conductors on the buses so the union was fighting for all the men ( and a few women) who would be left without jobs when the trams were taken off.
Here's an old photo of the main road through my suburb in the 1960s and there's a tram in the middle of the photo. Trust me when I say, that other than newer models of cars on that road, this road and the building on either side were still the same in 1968!

Facing the other way...wow! You could park your car at the side of the main road then! 😮

Other entries in the diary talked about my love of sewing. I would often make a dress especially for a Saturday night...often beginning the process of cutting out on Thursday or Friday night and sewing up on Saturday! But the styles were usually simple shift dresses with just some bust darts for shaping. I used my mum's old 1945 model Singer with its knee control and just straight stitch. But that machine and I made many outfits, from nighties to ball gowns, from shifts to jackets!

An entry in early January 1968, I describe how I was making a shoestring dress, but sad to say, I have no recollection of what it was like etc...lol
On Saturday, January 6 1968, it seems I had a busy day. Firstly in the morning, I went into the Valley (Fortitude Valley, once considered a must go to for shopping!), specifically to go to the free disco called TC's which was in the department store, TC Beirnes. That morning  Tony Worsley ( Aussie pop star of the 60s) was performing and apparently a pop group known as the National Reps. I do remember loving these performances and being so close to pop stars. :-)

In the afternoon, according to my diary, along with a number of other students from my high school, I stood outside the Enoggera Catholic church to catch a glimpse of my geography teacher Miss Mudge at her wedding to the maths teacher, Mr Mahony...oh lordy, such memories! I still see this couple occasionally at the local shops or school reunions!

In another entry I wrote about visiting a friend's home and being entertained there by her dad playing the rolls on their pianola. We would gather around the pianola and sing all the old songs with great gusto. I thought my friend and her parents were so lucky to have a pianola and I vowed to buy one 'when I grew up and got rich enough to buy one! lol. A few years ago I realised that I could afford one, but I decided I didn't want one after all. How fickle am I lol!!!
I think that throughout this year, I will tell you more about the year I turned 17.
(Do you know, according to my diary, I ironed for people to earn pocket money...it seems I had about 6 clientele ( mum's friends, neighbours, married daughters of neighbours who worked fulltime and wanted husband's long-sleeved shirts ironed; seemed to be quite a nice little earner.)

Taking retirement very seriously and keeping busy :-)

Last week DH and I went to the movies on 'cheap Tuesday'

The movie we went to see was 'Lincoln' and Daniel Day Lewis gave a brilliant performance. However it was a long and slow moving movie :-/

I've already written about my busy Wednesday, so the next mischief we got up to was having lunch with a former workmate of DH's and her husband. DH and I also worked with Bill, the husband, last year on the elections. The venue for the lunch was the Eatons Hill Tavern which is in a lovely park like setting. I was taken with this obviously, old tree as we walked to the entrance...

Note the large staghorns attached to the tree
After lunch we went back to our friends' house for coffee...

The cheeky butcher bird arrived for a 'hand out'...

Our friends. Bill's dad was the principal for 4 of my 5 years at high school. Note the passionfruit vine growing on the railing...but the fruit doesn't seem to 'set'.

Yes I know this is DH but on the right hand edge of the photo is one of 2 large trees left when the area was cleared for development...

Our local Target store closed today at 4pm. On Friday afternoon we went to the store to see if there were any items worth buying. I quickly saw that there was nothing that interested me, so I took some photos of the store which was already being dismantled.

The Loot store next door had 2 signs out the front...

On Saturday, DH went to friends' place for lunch. I took a rather blurry photo of some shelves in their media room...

My clever friend David had made these shelves out of the discarded floorboards from our old veranda. His wife Majella needs a mention too! She sanded all the timber ready for the boards to be used... a huge effort...but what a result!!

One way of keeping cool...:-)

Relatives and friends often ask me what gift they can buy DH for birthday/Christmas and I always respond that it's best to buy 'experiences' or gift cards etc, as, like me, he already has 'lots of stuff'. Consequently, these wonderful people have given DH movie gift cards. The other day DH mentioned that in the last month, we have been to the movies four times, which is quite a record for us. But it's a wonderful place to go when the weather is hot and humid!

So the 4 movies we've been to see are, 'Skyfall', 'Quartet', 'Les Miserables' and 'Hitchcock'. For 'Les Mis' I used a gift voucher for 'The Blue Room Cinebar' that I had been given by my brother. The Blue Room features very, very small cinemas, comfy, large seats and drinks and meals' service during the film. (like a smaller version of Gold Class) My gift voucher also included a drink and dinner for two.

Loved loved loved, 'Skyfall', 'Quartet' and 'Hitchcock'; loved the music and Hugh Jackman in 'Les Mis' but always get depressed by the degradation and death also in it. Although Helen Bonham Carter and Sacha Baron Cohen were delightful (ly mean but funny) in the movie.

Then yesterday DH and I headed off to QPAC for a matinee performance of 'South Pacific'. It was a magnificent show and our group of friends and relatives with us, all enjoyed it immensely. DsD1 drove us into  South Brisbane and we got there a little early (45 minutes too early! lol) so I took some photos of the area.

We got dropped off near the museum and have walked up to the intersection where the road to and from the Victoria bridge is
The Museum and Sciencentre

This is the elevated walkway which links the museum to QPAC; around the middle of this walkway is the lift well :-)

I'm up on the walkway here and looking towards the Convention centre on the left. South Brisbane, and West End in the near distance. Stefan's 'SkyNeedle' can be seen in the middle of the photo. This was an icon at World expo 88 and another icon, Stefan bought it and erected it at his head office. (he has a chain of hairdressing salons)

Some old buildings that were not razed to the ground...and little Fish Lane.

Looking the other way now from the walkway...Victoria Bridge and beyond it, the CBD. Some old buildings, such as the Treasury Casino are visible in front of the taller buildings...

Looking towards Queensland Performing Arts Complex (QPAC). Interesting the architect won awards for his design but to me it always looks like the concrete bunkers (armed with gun emplacements) built during WW2 to repel the enemy...

Lovely old Moreton Bay fig trees

DH and I had left our car at Alderley Station so we had to catch a train back there to get it.  South Brisbane Station is just over the road from QPAC so that's pretty convenient.

Looking back to Southbank Station with bus tunnel to the right of the railway lines...

Here's DH graciously smiling for the camera :-)
But that wasn't the end of the day for us... at Alderley we collected the car and headed over to Wilston to join our friends for dinner out....

DH says there is still some credit on his movie gift card...he wants to see 'Lincoln.'..I do too but I also want to see 'Pitch Perfect'... will the person who 'owns' the movie card win???? lol

We get around Part 2...

So where else have DH and I been this busy August?

One place that we went to was the annual dinner for the Tingalpa Pioneer Church and Cemetery. DH's cousin, Pamela and her brothers have been involved with this group (Friends of Tingalpa Cemetery Heritage group)for a number of years. Through their father's side they are related to early pioneers in this area and of course these ancestors are buried in the little cemetery. The group, by their efforts have rescued this piece of history and have restored both the little wooden church and  the graveyard. You can read a little bit about the group here. DH is related to Pamela through her mother but we always support the group by attending this dinner every August.

Jackie Butler who has been the driving force of the group

These nights are well known for their raffles...heaps of prizes!

DH and I won this! This place has beautiful fresh seafood :-)

A view of the church and part of the cemetery

Pamela's brother recently got married in the little church; that's her behind the happy couple
(DH and I weren't at that wedding, just want to show the church being used)

DH and I also went to see an Aussie made movie in August, 'The Sapphires'. It was a really enjoyable 'feel good' movie, set in the time of the Vietnam War. The Sapphires of the title are a female pop group who happen to be indigenous. There's humour, pathos and a few parts that made me cringe because the film touched on some of the racial issues, including the 'stolen generation'. But I loved the film. (we used movie vouchers that DH had got as gifts, so it was a 'cheap date :-) )

Friday night last week DH and I caught the train to the city and walked up to King George Square to the BrisStyle Indie Markets. And wow what an adventure...there were so many stalls...
And all these stalls were selling the most beautiful handcrafted items.
A bit blurry but I wanted to get a photo of the city hall with the lighting
That evening after we'd walked around the markets (well I walked and looked and chatted with stallholders, while poor DH 'hovered') we had another treat; dinner in the city.
But you know the 'gadabouts' still had one more special outing in August... DH was able to get some 'cheap tickets' to Cirque du Soleil Ovo from LastTix online.

The circus was at Hamilton, just near the cruise terminal

I took this photo of the circus ring before the show; through the dimness you might discern a giant egg...
No photos of course during the show but here are some excellent trailers of the show here and here. What a show! The acrobats, highwire and trapeze artists were amazing, as was the imaginative set. A really enjoyable show. We were fortunate to get the opportunity to go and see it for ourselves as our friends have 'raved' about how good the Cirque du Soleil shows have been over the years, but we had never been.
