Now for some more of our visit to the Imperial war Museum at Duxford in the UK.
Look at these lovely old wooden hangar folding doors...
This is the huge building that houses the 'Battle of Britain' Exhibition....
This gun mounted on the back of a truck was all about ingenuity and making use of what was available...the gun was bolted to this truck to make a mobile anti aircraft weapon at the base...
This is an example of the V2 rockets which bombarded UK cities during WW2...they were described as 'flying bombs'.
Some of the posters used during WW2...
This display shows a Messerschmidt plane that was shot down over the UK; the pilot was taken prisoner and as the displays shows, a guard was placed on the aircraft...
One of those fighter planes with wings that fold???
DH stands in front of a rather elaborately painted helicopter...
Defences with all the sandbags...
An A.R.P warden at work...
A closer view of that V2 rocket...
Yes I did get tired after hours of walking! lol
An old bus!
This strange 'vehicle' was actually an aircraft engine starter...originally war planes could be started by 'hand', swing the propellor around but as years went by the engines were much bigger and therefore almost impossible to start that way.
And we wandered along the pathways between other historic buildings...
The little hospital/sick quarters...
DH and I spent several hours at Duxford but really only saw a small part of the displays.

Our next stop was in the Historic Duxford Exhibit which was housed in some historic buildings...as well as static historical displays, there were also audio and video presentations. Perhaps the most poignant was an audio presentation of a former airman describing how a colleague's plane burst into flames on landing after a mission, while his fellow air force personnel, including ground crew, could only watch. He then explained that even though everyone was 'shook up' by their mate's death, the still had to continue on bombing missions almost straight away.
The room had been left just like it had been in WW2 |
