The Orange Empire Railway Museum...

Today we went into the desert here in California.
Some views on the way...
We went to the town of Perris where there is a very interesting railway museum, which included steam trains, diesel engined trains and trolleys or trams as Aussies would call them. The museum originally was on 10 acres but now covers 98 acres. It is on the site of an old town called Pinacate. The museum was the brain child of 14 teenagers who saw trolley cars being dumped and wanted to save them. From these humble beginnings we have the present complex. If you want to read about the history, here is a link.  http://www.oerm.org/history-museum

We had so much fun riding on some of the trolley cars and a train...what fun reading all the old adverts!

Mal, one of the volunteers taking us for a ride...
The vehicles that were giving rides today...

Some of the vehicles in some of the huge sheds on the property...
The next photo shows a funeral carriage...unfortunately being in a shed, we weren't able to get good photos.

The idea of this carriage was to enable families to have a dignified funeral for their loved one in the days before motor vehicles, when roads were just rutted tracks and it was difficult to transport a coffin in those conditions. The coffin slid into a glassed section on the right hand side, just above the wheels, so easy to slide in. In the carriage the family and friends could sit in comfortable chairs. The train would leave LA to collect the family and the deceased and it would travel to the church chosen. The carriage featured the most beaufyil stain glass windows on the sides.
We had a wonderful time at this museum! I even found a train that was 'my size'! Lol

It was hot but not humid...
We had fun fooling around for the camera...

DH was in his element!

And except for where the Las Vegas traffic met the freeway we were on, it was a smooth ride home.
