Pizza boxes??

The previous state election (in 2012) I wrote a few posts about what happens behind the scenes in the pre poll centres. I thought that I might repost some of those photos that I took to illustrate that old post.

Firstly though, a photo from last Saturday night after all the Supervisors from the 16 polling booths in this electoral district brought into the office all the resources and equipment that had been used that election day...
Our office got a rather cluttered look...

Note those cardboard boxes that look like rather large pizza boxes??? Let's have a another look at them...

Ta dah! Look what they unfold to make...

Voting screens for the polling booths! In the next photo you can see/glimpse the diagrams that help people unfold them and construct the screen...
Another 'cardboard' pile in the office on Saturday night!

There would be some readers who would remember the old wooden voting screens and the old wooden ballot boxes...nowadays it's all cardboard!
On Tuesday afternoon the 'cardboard dump' in our office will be heading off to the recycle section at our local tip...
(Generation Gap! One day during pre poll, I directed a young voter to the 'voting screens' (the correct term for that little private place people go to to fill out their ballot papers) to fill out the ballot paper I had issued to her...she went looking for computer terminals. Oh dear...maybe one day?)

  1. My goodness Maria, you are so busy. I have just been catching up on reading some blogs and have just read through the last 3 or 4 of your posts. I haven't been blogging much lately as I've been so busy making smocked dresses. They are selling quite quickly on Ebay and take up a lot of my time. I do so enjoy making them though. Have a nice day x jeanette

  2. I certainly remember the wooden ones - and really what a huge waste of resources to have new ones every year...the sooner we can do this on line the better I think..

  3. Aren't they clever little pizza boxes? I imagine it would still take quite awhile to set up a polling place. I agree with Susan, the sooner its online the better. Better still if we can do it from home.

  4. How interesting. We have more permanent ones that have to be stored away after each election.
I remember 20+ years ago when we had giant voting booths with automatic curtains that drew themselves behind you when you went in. You had to pull buttons and levers to vote. These didn't last very long and paper and pens are back nowadays. Those fancy ones must not have worked very well!

  6. That reminds me of the big election looming in the UK in May. There is talk of one day being able to vote on a computer. But, personally, I can see many problems with that. I did polling duty once and voting on paper and putting it into the correct box was too much for some voters!!

The lovely Kateryn Parr doll arrived today and I have blogged about it with a link to your blog. Many thanks.

  8. It was interesting to see the behind the scenes Maria.
So much one-off handling isn't it, but at least it goes to recycling ... ha ha, maybe they will end up as pizza boxes eventually!
Oh yes, to vote online would be good :D)
